Support AB 2249 (Cooley) the California Heritage Protection Act

CA Heritage Protection Act

CA Heritage Protection Act

UPDATE! AB 2249 was signed by Governor Brown. Thank you to everyone who supported this legislation and who used CSPF’s Action Center. With your help, we delivered over 1,400 letters to the Governor in support of AB 2249.

Assembly Bill 2249 by Assemblymember Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova) is the California Heritage Protection Act. This bill responds to the surprising development that created a legal tug-of-war with the identity of renowned facilities and spaces in Yosemite National Park.

If signed into law, AB 2249 would prohibit a state park concession contract from providing, or serving as the basis for, any claim of a trademark right in the name or names associated with a state park.

The contract currently used by the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) for state park concessions already prohibits such copywriting or trademarking. AB 2249 codifies these practices to make certain they continue.

We support AB 2249 because we believe that California’s state parks and facilities, as well as the assets within state parks, are public trust resources and should not be trademarked, patented, or copyrighted for private purposes.

Help us protect California’s state parks and join us in supporting this legislation. Use our online action center (below) to send a message to Governor Brown urging his support and signature on AB 2249.
